How to Choose the Right Swimming Pool Filtration?

How to Choose the Right Swimming Pool Filtration?

Don't guess on your pool sand filter—let your pool's specs drive the right choice.

Start with capacity: pools under 15,000 gallons thrive with a 16–18" sand filter, while larger pools (15,000–30,000 gallons) need 20–24" models to match optimal water turnover.

Prioritize filtration efficiency too—high-quality quartz sand media (20–40 mesh) traps fine debris, and corrosion-resistant fiberglass or polyethylene tanks ensure durability.

AQUA takes the hassle out: our sand filters are engineered for every scenario, from residential backyards to commercial pools.

Rigorously tested for reliable flow, quiet operation, and compliance with strict ISO standards, each model pairs seamlessly with pool pumps.

Whether you need basic water purification or heavy-duty filtration for high-traffic pools, AQUA delivers a tailored, long-lasting solution.

Complete Swimming Pool Filtration System Solutions for You

Swimming pool filtration is the core hub of the entire water treatment system and works closely with other components:

With circulation pumps: The pump supplies power to send pool water to the filter, while the filter removes impurities. Together they achieve primary water purification.

With heating equipment: Clean water flowing through heat pumps or electric heaters reduces scaling and clogging, greatly improving heat exchange efficiency and lowering energy consumption.

With disinfection systems: Filtration removes suspended solids first, allowing chlorine or salt-chlorine generators to disinfect more effectively and preventing impurities from consuming disinfectant.

With intelligent monitoring: Linked controllers automatically trigger backwashing based on filter pressure, requiring no manual operation.

In short: filtration comes first, enabling other equipment to run efficiently. They work together to keep the pool constant-temperature, clean and healthy.

FAQs of Swimming Pool Filtration

  • Q

How to match a sand filter to my pool's needs?

    A

Follow these simple steps for a perfect fit, ensuring efficient filtration:

    Calculate pool volume:

Rectangular pools: Length*Width*Depth*7.48 (converts cubic feet to gallons).

Irregular pools: Estimate with closest rectangular dimensions or shape-specific formulas.

Find required flow rate: Aim for full water circulation every 4 hours—flow rate (GPH) = Pool volume ÷ 4.

Choose the right filter: Pick a model with a flow rate matching/exceeding your calculation. Add 10-20% to the flow rate if your pool has water features, heaters, or other extra equipment (they increase system resistance).

Pro tip: Match the filter's flow rate to your pool pump for optimal performance and durability.

  • Q

How to use sand filter for filtration?

    A

    A. Preparation work before use sand filter for filtration - sand filling. After installing the sand filter, it needs to be filled with sand. Before filling with sand, check whether the filter pipe is installed firmly, then inject about a quarter of the water to buffer the impact of the sand, and finally pour in the sand.

    B. Filter: Turn the handle of the sand tank head to "FILTER" for normal filtration.

    C. Backwash: When the pressure expression reaches 1.5Kg/cm2, backwash is required. Firstly turn off the pool pump, then turn the handle to "BACKWASH", then turn on the pool pump to perform backwash.

    D. Rinse: End backwash after about 2 minutes. Turn off the pool pump again and set the sand filter head to filter tube cleaning ("RINSE").

    E. After that, turn on the pump for about 20 seconds, then stop the pump, adjust the sand filter head to "FILTER", and then turn on the pump to perform normal filtration work.

  • Q

How long is the warranty period of the sand filter? What should I do if there is a problem during use?

    A

Our sand filters have a 1-year warranty. If you encounter problems during use, you can send us photos and videos as a basis for judgment, and we will provide a solution.

  • Q

How should I perform daily backwash operations?

    A

Backwash is the most common way to clean a sand filter and is used to remove suspended solids and some organic matter on the surface of the sand layer.

Trigger condition: When the pressure gauge reading on the sand filter is more than 0.5kg/cm² (about 50kPa) higher than the last backwash, or reaches 2.5kg/cm², backwash must be carried out immediately.

    Operation steps:

    A. Stop the pool pump operation.

    B. Switch the multi-way valve to the "Backwash" position.

    C. Start the pool pump and observe the water coming out of the sewage outlet until it is clear (usually 3–5 minutes).

    D. Turn off the pool pump, adjust the valve to the "Rinse" position and run it for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

    E. Finally, switch back to "Filter" mode to resume operation.

Note: Backwash must be done when the pool pump is shut down and the valve is operated without pressure. Multiple sand filters should be carried out one by one, and backwash cannot be carried out at the same time.

  • Q

When should I replace the filter media in my sand filter?

    A

We recommend replacing the filter media in your sand filter every 1-2 years. Because some sand will be consumed during use, the more sand is consumed, the worse the filtering effect of the sand filter will be. Therefore, it is necessary to check the amount of sand regularly and replace the sand within the specified time.
